Explanation of the conversion: Grimlock can only use his bite, claws and flame breath in dinosaur form, whereas he can only use his rocket launcher, rocket pod and sword in robot mode. This write-up also works for his Generation Two form.

History (Devil's Due comics): In 2004 Grimlock was among the Autobots under the leadership Optimus Prime who attempted to take back the planet Cybertron from the Decepticon tyrant Shockwave. After an accident with the teleportational systems of the supercomputer Teletran-3, Sludge found himself sent back in time and on the planet Earth. He was reformatted in the form of an Earth dinosaur with several other Autobots. A group of humans were able to bring the new Dinobots back to Cybertron and they helped overcome Shockwave (G.I. Joe vs. The Transformers II #4).

History (Dreamwave comics): Over 8 mllion years ago, Grimlock was a pit fighter on Cybertron. He was considered by Decepticon leader Megatron for the Decepticon inner circle, but there was worry he lacked the killer instinct. Another gladiator named Starscream tried to goad Grimlock into joining the Decepticons. Unlike most in his profession, Grimlock did not join with the Decepticon cause when civil war broke out with the Autobots.

Grimlock served as an Autobot field commander in the Great War, under the leadership of Sentinel Prime. Grimlock's troops included Ironhide, Wheeljack and Kup.

After Megatron killed the Autobot leader Sentinel Prime, a new Autobot leader was chosen by the Council of the Ancients. Grimlock was present when Optronix was given the Matrix and reformatted into Optimus Prime. Three Decepticon assassins attempted to kill Optimus, but were unsuccessful. Optimus then ordered a planet-wide evacuation of Cybertron by the Autobots (Transformers: The War Within #1).

Starscream, Skywarp and Thundercracker attacked the city of Protihex under the orders of Megatron. Knowing that Grimlock joined with the Autobots, but was dissatisified with them, Starscream offered Grimlock the chance to join the attack on Protihex. Grimlock rejected the offer and not only evacuated the Autobot outpost before the attack could occur, he left an explosive trap for Starscream and company. If not for Skywarp's ability to teleport them all to safety, the Decepticons may have not escaped alive (Transformers: The War Within #3).

Although Optimus eventually did stand and fight, Grimlock always saw him as a cowardly leader.

Grimlock When Optimus Prime and Megatron were seemingly destroyed in a mishap with a space bridge, the Autobots and Decepticons broke up into factions. Grimlock lead one faction called the Lightning Strike Coalition (L.S.C.), whose members included Inferno, Ironhide, Kup, Slag, Sludge, Smokescreen, Snarl, Swoop and Wheeljack. The main Autobot faction were lead by Prowl, while Springer commanded the Wreckers and Hotspot commanded the Protectabots, two other Autobot splinter-groups.

Grimlock led L.S.C. members Ironhide, Kup, Slag, Sludge, Snarl, Swoop and Wheeljack in stealing a shipment of energon from Starscream and the Predacons at the Moon Alpha Space Port (Transformers: The War Within - The Dark Ages #1).

When Grimlock learned that Jetfire had arranged a meeting with Shockwave Grimlock suspected that Jetfire had betrayed the Autobots to the Decepticons (Transformers: The War Within - The Dark Ages #3).

Grimlock Grimlock was among the Cybertonians kidnapped by the Fallen to be used in an arcane ritual, but he escaped.

Eventually Ultra Magnus united the Autobot factions. Grimlock was made an aid to Magnus. Grimlocks' special troops, Slag, Sludge, Snarl and Swoop, were dubbed the Dynobots.

When Optimus Prime and over a dozen of his top troops were lost on a mission on the Ark, Grimlock and his Dynobots followed them to the planet Earth, where they were reformatted in the form of dinosaurs and fought the Decepticons Sharpnel, Bombshell and Kickback. Grimlock and the his troops were lost in stasis lock until the 1980's when Optimus's crew uncovered them.

Eventually the combined forces of the Autobots on Earth and their human allies were able to capture the Decepticons. A ship called the Ark II was built to take the Cybertonians back to Cybertron, along with some human companions, but the ship exploded shortly after takeoff. The human allies were killed, but the Cybertonians were lost in the ocean, again in statis lock.

Grimlock and others were recovered by a rogue military unit and reprogrammed as slave war machines.

Grimlock, Bumblebee and Soundwave Bumblebee, Frenzy, Grimlock, Laserbeak, Prowl, Ravage, Soundwave and Starscream were forced to attack the Smitco oil refinery in the Arctic to display their power for sale to the highest bidder (Transformer: Generation One #2).

Megatron broke free and then freed his fellow Decepticons and Grimlock. Sick of how he was treated by the humans, Grimlock briefly joined Megatron in opposing Optimus Prime, but after a battle between the factions, Grimlock left, not wanting to be associated with either side.

Three hundred years after the end of the Great War and after the defeat of Megatron II, the planet Cybertron was left reformatted into a techno-organic world.

On the reformatted techno-organic Cybertron Cheetor, Rattrap, Silverbolt III and Blackarachnia were interviewed by the Autobot reporter Rook. They then welcomed the Autobots Roulette, Shadowstriker, Sideswipe, Sunstreaker and Trailbreaker back to Cybertron. Buzzsaw III, Quickstrike II and Rockbuster were also present. The returning Autobots along with Blackarachnia and Silverbolt III were then abducted via teleportation beams and taken to Unicron. Tap-Out, Megatron IV, Brawn, Grimlock and Snarl III were also abducted from various timelines. Silverbolt III, Blackarachnia, Sideswipe and Sunstreaker were forcibly reformatted by Unicron. Taken captive by Razorclaw IV, Reptilion, Obsidian III, Tankor II and Striker, the Autobots were forced to fight one another. They witnessed Smokescreen III kill Smokescreen, whose spark was absorbed by Unicron. Sensing the need for a champion Primus and Alpha Trion brought Optimus Primal back to life (Transformers: Universe #1).

Grimlock History (Marvel comics): Grimlock was among the Autobots who joined Optimus Prime in his mission on board the Ark to save the planet Cybertron from a meteor shower 4 million years ago. They were attacked by Megatron and his Decepticon forces. After crashing on the planet Earth, they were followed to Earth by the Decepticon named Shockwave. Grimlock and his soldiers were reformatted by the Ark's computer Teletran-1 using the last of it's energy to resemble Earth native animals. They attacked Shockwave and were burried with him together in a tar pit in the Savage Land until the 1980's when the Autobot Ratchet recovered and repaired them.

Grimlock was among the united Autobot and Decepticon forces who opposed Unicron's assault on the planet Cybertron in 1991 (Transformers #75).

The most fearsome and powerful of the Dinobots, Grimlock would gladly usurp Optimus Prime's role as Autobot commander if he thought he could get away with it. For now, he's happy to tear into the enemy Decepticons whenever he can and wait for a more opportune moment to try for the leadership. He can be cold and merciless, and shows contempt for those he views as weak, such as humans and even some fellow Autobots, but he is a valiant warrior and his actions command respect from all who are witness to them, both friend and foe.

Nosecone Trivia: On the Transformers television show, the voice of Grimlock is played by actor Gregg Berger. Besides the original form Grimlock took, later toys portrayed him as a Pretender and an Action Master. He was also reissued in different colors as a Generation Two Transformer. There have also been versions made by other companies with altered colors and variations like horns, larger claws and fins on the back. In the Television series Grimlock and the Dinobots had a very different origin. They were created by Wheeljack and Ratchet after discovering dinosaur bones burried behind the Ark.

Grimlock Powers: Grimlock's strength is second only to Optimus Prime's, and even that is arguable. He is a highly skilled fighter, with a knowledge of Cybertonian pit fighting techniques that rivals Megatron's abilities. He is as tough as they come and nearly fearless. He can turn into a mechanical dinosaur. In dinosaur mode he can use his powerful jaws to snap in two virtually anything that comes between them - from a 4-foot diameter steel cable to a Decepticon leg. He can also breath fire.

In robot mode he wields an energo-sword, which can slice a 2-foot thick concrete wall with one sweep of its crackling blade. He also uses a double-barreled self-propelled rocket launcher rifle and a shoulder mounted rocker pod. Grimlock sometimes utilizes a standard Autobot jet pack.

SWORD

Weaknesses: Other than arrogance and lack of speed, Grimlock has no significant weaknesses. Due to a glitch in his vocal subprocessor, Grimlock speaks in an odd, primitive manner. This often causes his foes to underestimate, and he seems to have no intention of repairing it.
