Explanation of the conversion:

History: Laynia Petrovna and her twin brother Nicolai, now Vanguard, were born in Minsk to the premiere Soviet scientist, Sergei Krylov, whose work with nuclear radiation made his children born as mutants. Upon the discovery of the twins' mutant nature, the government stole the children in order to raise them for the good of the state and led their father to believe them dead. The government trained them to be special agents, giving Laynia the code-name Darkstar based on her abilities to wield the extradimensional energy known as Darkforce. Petrovna and her brother came into conflict with many American heroes under the state's direction.

Later, Sergei Krylov became the super-powered menace called the Presence. The government wanted his threat eliminated and sent his own children out to murder him. Unaware of their true relationship, the heroes learned that the Presence was their father and turned against the Soviet regime. Petrovna and her brotehr joined fellow agent Ursa Major in becoming agents on their own, fighting for the good of the people as the Soviet Super Soldiers.

Darkstar Petrovna wandered to America where she encountered and joined the hero team Champions, and when that team disbanded, she joined the Defenders. She developed a brief romance with fellow teammate Iceman. After several adventures, she returned to her homeland.

Finally fed up with their Soviet government, the Soviet Super Soldiers defected to the United States, only to be captured and returned to the U.S.S.R. by the new government-sponsored team, the Supreme Soviets. There, they were rescued by Blind Faith and his fellow mutant "exiles," in order to form an underground team that would fight for the people under a government that hates and fears them. In one such battle, Petrovna and Blind Faith encountered a immensely powerful psychic being, the Soul-Skinner, and with the help of Iceman and his mutant teammates of the X-Men, defeated him.

Later, Petrovna was captured by General Tskarov, a communist sympathizer who wanted to use Petrovna's abilities in his plans to cripple American business along the east coast, even if that meant putting her through painful scientific experiments. Luckily, she was discovered by Tskarov's other pawn, Ursa Major, and with him, her brother, the hero Daredevil and the Black Widow, helped bring Tskarov down.

Upon returning to her mother country, Petrovna, with her brother, joined the new super team known as the Winter Guard, under circumstances not fully revealed. She continues to champion with the Winter Guard, such as in defending the country from invasion by the Chinese world-conqueror, Mandarin, and occasionally helps the X-Men, such as in capturing the renegade scientist-turned-supervillain, the Black Death.

Powers: Darkstar possesses the ability to tap and manipulate an intense-black form of extradimensional energy called the Darkforce. This energy, which appears to be related to the extradimensional black gas-like substance manipulated by the Shroud and Cloak, possesses mass and form whereas the Shroud's and Cloak's does not. It may be that it is the same substance and Darkstar simply knows how to manipulate it to greater effect than the other two. Her power seems analogous to that of Blackout.

Darkstar can project the Darkforce into simple mentally controlled forms such as pincers, rings, columns, spheres, and so on. She can form objects with the density of steel. She can form objects with a maximum volume of approximately 750 cubic feet, sufficient to encompass ten human beings comfortably. These objects are solid and well defined while she consciously wills them to be. If she is rendered unconscious, they dissipate. Darkstar can also project the Darkforce as a beam of solid force, capable of impacting an object with sufficient power to rupture 3-inch solid high-carbon steel or tip over an average, loaded railroad boxcar (15 tons).

Darkstar can also employ the Darkforce to teleport herself and up to three others. She does this, in a manner similar to that of Cloak, by entering into the Darkforce's dimension of origin, traversing a distance (which may or may not be the linear correspondent distance in this dimension) and reemerging in Earth's space. She has so far been able to travel a maximum distance of about t mile in this way. Because crossing through the interdimensional portal disorients her sense of direction, and the light of the Earth dimension blinds her for several seconds upon reemergence, teleportation is risky. It also takes her several seconds to create a portal into the Darkforce dimension, preventing her from teleporting out of the way of such high velocity danger as a bullet.

Darkstar can utilize the attractive force of the Darkforce dimension to fly. By generating a virtually invisible portal into the dimension in the contour of her body, she balances its attractive force upon her against that of Earth's gravity, without passing through the portal. She can fly at speeds up to 120 miles per hour, the maximum velocity at which she is still able to breathe. She cannot support the weight of anyone other than herself while in flight.
